ROOT1066
On 14 October 1066 the path of English and European history was irrevocably changed. To mark the 950th anniversary of the most famous date in English history, Hastings Borough Council commissioned the ROOT 1066 International Festival: a contemporary festival across many art forms through September and October 2016.
Alongside the curated programme, the network funded artists to produce work as an inspirational starting point for schools across Hastings and Rother, with downloadable toolkits additionally supported by Rother District Council and the East Sussex Arts Partnership.
The Bayeux Tapestry Bookwork: Lee Shearman
An original 50 foot accordion folded collaged bookwork inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. Pupils create their own individual accordion-fold collaged books, then collaborate as a class: or an entire school: by joining their pages together into a longer bookwork. Lee Shearman is an arts educator, freelance illustrator and designer based in St Leonards-on-Sea, one of the founders of the art collective Borbonesa, and was artist-in-residence for the ROOT 1066 International Festival.

Ten poems in ten poetic styles for schools, inspired by the 1066 Battle of Hastings: stimulating discussion, poetry and performance from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3. Using the toolkit as a springboard, pupils make a live performance of their poems, backdropped by their visual displays, with the additional choice of a Poetry Slam or Rap Battle. Steve Tasane’s first novel, Blood Donors, was included in the Diverse Voices list of the 50 best children’s books for cultural diversity.
